Battle of the Lip Butters!

30 Mar

So it seems that every makeup brand is coming out with their own line of lip butters. What is a lip butter you ask? Basically it’s a tube or pot of tinted lip balm- a product that will give you color and keep lips hydrated. I noticed so many of them out there on the market so I did some research of my own and here are my thoughts on the most popular ones.

1. Revlon Color Burst Lip Butters (can be found at drugstores): These come in SO many different shades that it was hard to pick one. I got creamsicle and it was a nudeish-orange tint. The packaging is super cute and really easy to just throw in your bag and go. I didn’t love this color because it came out a bit white and too frosty on my lips. The texture was really smooth and it kept my lips moisturized but I felt like it came off within half an hour.

2. Maybelline Baby Lips: Unlike the Revlon ones, these are scented and they smell SO YUMMY! I got pink punch and cherry me, both are very pigmented (pinkish/red) and kept my lips soft for a while. I have to warn you though, I was tempted to lick it off because these smelled so good. For only $3-4 you really can’t go wrong with these!

3. L’Oreal Colour Riche Balm: I am a total sucker for packaging and these reminded me of the YSL lipsticks so I was pretty much sold after that. I purchased two shades: caring coral and nourishing nude- both great everyday colors! Out of the drugstore balms this is definitely my favorite. The color variety was very nice, they were well tinted (more than a balm but a little less than lipstick). These had a great shiny sheen to them which was great because I didn’t have to apply lipgloss overtop of it.

4. KORRES Lip Butter (can be found at Sephora): I LOVE this stuff! Usually I hate any lip products in pots, but this one is worth digging your finger in. I have it in the jasmine flavor which also seems to have a bit of a vanilla scent. I really enjoy it because the scent isn’t too overbearing and it keeps my lips hydrated all day.

5. Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Swivel Stick: This is a staple in my beauty bag for various reasons. This product can be used anytime you have super dry skin or chapped lips; I especially like this for the winter time when the weather seems to dry up my skin the most. It has a very nice vanilla scent and has no color or tint and I have heard people using it for anything from scars to stretch marks. It costs around $5 dollars and is well worth it for all the purposes it has.

What are your favorite lip butters? Are there any colors/shades that you particularly love? Let me know, I would love to hear them!

March Beauty Misses

In my journey to find the latest and greatest products I have also stumbled into a bunch that I wasn’t a fan of. Nothing annoys me more than when a company advertises a product and claims that it will do various things and it ends up not being able to live up to its hype. These following products I have had for about 2 months, plenty of time for me to fall in love (or in this case hate) with them.

1. Physicians Formula Happy Booster Bronzer: I had previously purchased the blush and really have been enjoying using it. It has great color and and the texture allows for easy blending on top of my powder; it also smells really good. But I was so dissapointed with this bronzer! There is virtually no color payoff, the colors look great in the pan but barely get on the brush (I was vigorously swooshing and stabbing it just so I could get some product). So after going through every possible brush I own, I gave up.

2. Benefit Ooh La Lift Instant Under Eye Brightener: I have always been a fan of benefit products and found them to be pretty affordable and of good quality. I had high hopes for it but after using it every day for weeks I noticed NO difference. Literally nothing. I might as well have applied nothing under my eyes because that’s what it seemed like. The consistency is nice and it penetrates into the skin fairly quick but like I said, it didn’t brighten or conceal or reduce dark under eye circles or anything. What a bummer!

Image

3. MAC Benefit Fix +: I feel like I am going to anger a lot of MAC lovers with this one- seriously what’s the point of this product? I purchased it because so many people raved about it and used it as a makeup set or as a way to liven up your face. This did nothing for making my makeup stay on longer or reduce oil and keep my face matte all day. I tried reeeeaaaally hard to love it but I just can’t! I have also heard people using it on their hair to add a little shine and oomph, so maybe I’ll do that.

I guess it’s true what they say, you can’t win ’em all right? But if you have any suggestions with these products or ones that work better than them, please let me know!

Spring Hair Obsessions

25 Mar

I have been wanting to switch up my routine for a while now and after a couple of weeks of using some new products, here are my favorites:

1. Michael O’Rourke Moisture Madness Shampoo- This normally runs at about $20 but I was lucky enough to find it at my TJMaxx for only $10. What I really love about this is that it helps lock in my color (color treated hair) and moisturizes my split ends without leaving my locks looking like a grease pit. Check out your local TJMaxx and Marshalls because I went to a couple and they all had Michael O’Rourke hair products; if you can’t find it there it is also on Ebay and Amazon.

2. Argan Magic Intensive Hair Oil: I’ve been putting this on after the shower and it moisturizes my ends and leaves my hair really soft.

3. Remington Hair Curling Wand: There is really no other way to describe this product other than the fact that I am OBSESSED with it. Some people complained that it was complicated to use but I thought it was super easy and it only took me 10 minutes to curl my long hair! If you are looking for big Kardashian-like curls/waves I highly suggest this product. Because of its cone shape, it gives you curls that you just can’t get with a traditional curling iron.

Go Nude

16 Mar

Even though bright lipsticks are all the rage this season, a nice nude lip color is classy and everyone can pull it off!

I’ve compiled a quick list of tips to help with finding the perfect nude lipstick without making you look like Casper the ghost.

DO find a color that is within two shades of your natural lip color. If you are fair skinned, look for colors that have a pink undertone. If you are medium or darker shade, go for the beige/brown undertone.

DON’T look washed out. You don’t want to look like you just put concealer all over your lips. “Nude” is a term to describe your natural lip color and you want to find a lipstick that makes you look like you..but better!

DO exfoliate your lips before applying lipstick. Nobody likes flaky dry lips so use a scrub or lip conditioner. Recently I have been loving MAC’s lip conditioner and I always put it on in the morning and before I go to bed at night. You can find it at any MAC store or online here: http://www.maccosmetics.com/product/164/472/Lip-Conditioner-Tube/index.tmpl

Here are a few of my favorite nudes!

1. Revlon in “Soft Nude”- I’ve talked about this one a couple times but it’s my go-to lipstick for everyday and you cant beat the drugstore price.

2. L’Oreal in “Fairest Nude”- The formula is so smooth and leaves a nice creamy finish that lasts pretty well throughout the day. This is a little more mauve than the Revlon color, and I think it would look great with any skin tone. The only complaint I have is that it has a bit of a chemical smell, so if you are sensitive to scents this may not be for you.

3. MAC in “Viva Glam Gaga 2”- This color is more beige and can make me look washed out so I only use it in the summer. If you are naturally dark this would be a great nude color for you and it’s pretty affordable as well.

What are your favorite nude lipsticks?

Blushingly Beautiful

8 Mar

I’m not even sure that blushingly is a word but I thought it sounded catchy. Wearing blush allows you to enhance the natural flush of your face without the “orange” look of a harsh bronzer. I was inspired to go through a few of my favorite blushes (which include drugstore and high-end) because as I sit here and write this it’s currently 65 degrees in Baltimore. HELLOOO SPRING!

1. ELF in Pink Passion: This color is so bright and pink that it actually makes me happier just putting it on. It’s very pigmented and doesn’t have any shimmer so it gives a nice matte look. I purchased mine at Target but the full line of ELF makeup products are available online at eyeslipsface.com

Image

2. Smashbox: I’m a huge fan of all Smashbox products and even though they are a bit pricey the quality is totally worth it. My two favorite colors are Heartbreak which is a coral with gold shimmer and Paradise which is a bit more of a nude-coral.

3. Lancome Blush Subtil: I have a duo compact which has the colors shimmer coral sunset and sheer peach organza. The coral sunset is a deep coral color with silver shimmer and the peach organza is a lighter peach matte. Both are beautiful and I love combining them together!

4. Milani: I know I mentioned this in my drugstore favorites post but the Milani baked blushes come in a couple different shades and are my ultimate favorites.

Blush Application

If you are using very pigmented blushes like the ones I mentioned above, be careful with the amount you are applying! You only need a light swoosh to get a decent amount of color on your brush. Here is a good brush guideline when it comes to applying different types of blush and the look you are going for:

So go have some fun and experiment with different colors that highlight and enhance your natural skin flush! Pinks and corals are all the rage this spring season.

Whatever you do, don’t end up looking like this girl…
