Review: The Balm Nude Tude Eyeshadow Palette

18 Jul

Hello beauties!

After recently discovering The Balm makeup products this year, I was excited to test this palette out and see what these shadows have to offer. First of all I have to say that the packaging of this palette is to die for! Nude/Neutrals palettes have been popping up all over the place and it seems that every brand now has their own version.

I had high hopes for the this palette that runs at about $36 and I was definitely not let down. Like my previous experiences with their products, these shadows were so buttery smooth and blended very easily. I like that these colors were wearable and since they were well pigmented, you could build up the color depending on if you are going to work or going out. I also enjoyed the fact that there were very shimmery colors, some satin finish, and a bunch of matte colors which are great for blending into the crease.

Image

1. Sassy- frosty white

2. Snobby- frosty yellow

3. Stubborn-frosty pinkish/peach

4. Stand-offish- a shimmery peach with yellow/gold undertones

5. Selfish-  taupey brown/grey color (reminds me a lot of MACs satin taupe)

6. Sultry- medium brown (satin/matte finish)

7. Sophisticated- dark brown with gold shimmer

8. Schizo- medium brown with gold shimmer

9. Sexy- a deep, matte reddish/brown

10. Silly- reddish brown with gold sparkle

11. Serious- matte black

12. Sleek- very dark matte brownish black

If you are looking for a good palette to travel with or something to add to your collection that is versatile and great quality, I would highly suggest this palette. Compared to the Naked 1 & 2 palettes, I think the colors in this product are more unique and not as glittery. You wanna look glowing, not like you just got attacked by the glitter aisle at Michaels.

Battle of the Lip Butters!

30 Mar

So it seems that every makeup brand is coming out with their own line of lip butters. What is a lip butter you ask? Basically it’s a tube or pot of tinted lip balm- a product that will give you color and keep lips hydrated. I noticed so many of them out there on the market so I did some research of my own and here are my thoughts on the most popular ones.

1. Revlon Color Burst Lip Butters (can be found at drugstores): These come in SO many different shades that it was hard to pick one. I got creamsicle and it was a nudeish-orange tint. The packaging is super cute and really easy to just throw in your bag and go. I didn’t love this color because it came out a bit white and too frosty on my lips. The texture was really smooth and it kept my lips moisturized but I felt like it came off within half an hour.

2. Maybelline Baby Lips: Unlike the Revlon ones, these are scented and they smell SO YUMMY! I got pink punch and cherry me, both are very pigmented (pinkish/red) and kept my lips soft for a while. I have to warn you though, I was tempted to lick it off because these smelled so good. For only $3-4 you really can’t go wrong with these!

3. L’Oreal Colour Riche Balm: I am a total sucker for packaging and these reminded me of the YSL lipsticks so I was pretty much sold after that. I purchased two shades: caring coral and nourishing nude- both great everyday colors! Out of the drugstore balms this is definitely my favorite. The color variety was very nice, they were well tinted (more than a balm but a little less than lipstick). These had a great shiny sheen to them which was great because I didn’t have to apply lipgloss overtop of it.

4. KORRES Lip Butter (can be found at Sephora): I LOVE this stuff! Usually I hate any lip products in pots, but this one is worth digging your finger in. I have it in the jasmine flavor which also seems to have a bit of a vanilla scent. I really enjoy it because the scent isn’t too overbearing and it keeps my lips hydrated all day.

5. Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Swivel Stick: This is a staple in my beauty bag for various reasons. This product can be used anytime you have super dry skin or chapped lips; I especially like this for the winter time when the weather seems to dry up my skin the most. It has a very nice vanilla scent and has no color or tint and I have heard people using it for anything from scars to stretch marks. It costs around $5 dollars and is well worth it for all the purposes it has.

What are your favorite lip butters? Are there any colors/shades that you particularly love? Let me know, I would love to hear them!

March Beauty Misses

27 Mar

In my journey to find the latest and greatest products I have also stumbled into a bunch that I wasn’t a fan of. Nothing annoys me more than when a company advertises a product and claims that it will do various things and it ends up not being able to live up to its hype. These following products I have had for about 2 months, plenty of time for me to fall in love (or in this case hate) with them.

1. Physicians Formula Happy Booster Bronzer: I had previously purchased the blush and really have been enjoying using it. It has great color and and the texture allows for easy blending on top of my powder; it also smells really good. But I was so dissapointed with this bronzer! There is virtually no color payoff, the colors look great in the pan but barely get on the brush (I was vigorously swooshing and stabbing it just so I could get some product). So after going through every possible brush I own, I gave up.

2. Benefit Ooh La Lift Instant Under Eye Brightener: I have always been a fan of benefit products and found them to be pretty affordable and of good quality. I had high hopes for it but after using it every day for weeks I noticed NO difference. Literally nothing. I might as well have applied nothing under my eyes because that’s what it seemed like. The consistency is nice and it penetrates into the skin fairly quick but like I said, it didn’t brighten or conceal or reduce dark under eye circles or anything. What a bummer!

Image

3. MAC Benefit Fix +: I feel like I am going to anger a lot of MAC lovers with this one- seriously what’s the point of this product? I purchased it because so many people raved about it and used it as a makeup set or as a way to liven up your face. This did nothing for making my makeup stay on longer or reduce oil and keep my face matte all day. I tried reeeeaaaally hard to love it but I just can’t! I have also heard people using it on their hair to add a little shine and oomph, so maybe I’ll do that.

I guess it’s true what they say, you can’t win ’em all right? But if you have any suggestions with these products or ones that work better than them, please let me know!

Go Nude

16 Mar

Image

Even though bright lipsticks are all the rage this season, a nice nude lip color is classy and everyone can pull it off!

I’ve compiled a quick list of tips to help with finding the perfect nude lipstick without making you look like Casper the ghost.

DO find a color that is within two shades of your natural lip color. If you are fair skinned, look for colors that have a pink undertone. If you are medium or darker shade, go for the beige/brown undertone.

DON’T look washed out. You don’t want to look like you just put concealer all over your lips. “Nude” is a term to describe your natural lip color and you want to find a lipstick that makes you look like you..but better!

DO exfoliate your lips before applying lipstick. Nobody likes flaky dry lips so use a scrub or lip conditioner. Recently I have been loving MAC’s lip conditioner and I always put it on in the morning and before I go to bed at night. You can find it at any MAC store or online here: http://www.maccosmetics.com/product/164/472/Lip-Conditioner-Tube/index.tmpl

Here are a few of my favorite nudes!

1. Revlon in “Soft Nude”- I’ve talked about this one a couple times but it’s my go-to lipstick for everyday and you cant beat the drugstore price.

2. L’Oreal in “Fairest Nude”- The formula is so smooth and leaves a nice creamy finish that lasts pretty well throughout the day. This is a little more mauve than the Revlon color, and I think it would look great with any skin tone. The only complaint I have is that it has a bit of a chemical smell, so if you are sensitive to scents this may not be for you.

3. MAC in “Viva Glam Gaga 2”- This color is more beige and can make me look washed out so I only use it in the summer. If you are naturally dark this would be a great nude color for you and it’s pretty affordable as well.

What are your favorite nude lipsticks?

Beauty on a Budget

24 Feb

“The most beautiful makeup for a woman is passion. But cosmetics are easier to buy.” -Yves Saint Laurent

There is a sudden rush I get when I find a product that I love and is inexpensive. Drugstore brands like Revlon, Maybelline, and L’Oreal are always coming out with new products to compete with fancy high-end companies. I love this time of year because as the season changes and the weather becomes warmer, these companies come out with new products to cater to our every day beauty needs. Recently I went out to stores like Target, Walgreens, CVS, and Walmart to see what all the hype is about. Here are my favorites:

1. Milani baked blush- Um, first of all why have I not discovered this brand sooner?! I am so amazed at the quality and how pigmented this blush turned out. It is a dupe of the MAC mineralize bronzers and blushes but with a way better price. It stays on all day, isn’t too shimmery and gives a beautiful glow.

2. L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara After watching countlesss videos of makeup gurus ranting and raving about this stuff, I finally caved in and bought it. Now, I will be the first one to say that I have hated every single drugstore mascara I’ve purchased but this one really surprised me. It gave me great length and volume. It coated every lash and did not clump or crumble after wearing it all day. Highly recommended!

Image

3. Maybelline Smooth Mousse Foundation- Once again, I have never been satisfied with a drugstore foundation and found them to make my skin oily and breakout. I purchased this for the first time a couple months ago on a whim because I had run out of the MAC foundation I usually use. This has become my all-time favorite foundation- I seriously can not say enough good things about it! I have freckles and this gives me the perfect coverage that lasts all day. If you are looking for a medium-full coverage this is worth trying out.

Image

4. Revlon Colorburst Lipstick These lipsticks are super pigmented and glide on lips very smoothly. My favorite color is soft nude, which is shown in the picture below. I specifically love this shade because it’s versatile and completes any look you are going for.

5. Tresseme Split Remedy Serum- I have a love/hate relationship with drugstore hair products and can never find anything I am truly happy with. For the past year I have been using Moroccan Oil products and although I liked them at first, I found that it made my hair ultra soft (almost too soft) and did nothing for my split ends. They’re also very pricey. So, I purchased this on a whim and I am officially obsessed with it. I applied it on the ends of my damp hair and after blowdrying and straightening it out my hair looked like I just got a fresh cut (SERIOUSLY!!) My split ends have disappeared and I hope they never come back- good riddance!

6. Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush There has been a lot of different opinions on this new product but I was really excited to try it out. It has the texture of play- doh (so cool) and I purchased it in the color “rose petal” which is a soft pink. Although it is not very pigmented and I wouldn’t use it alone as a blush, it makes a great highlighter for your cheekbones.

7. Garnier Skin Renew Under Eye Concealer- This works wonders for sleep-deprived college kids like me! Super easy to roll on under your eyes and it gets rid of the dark circles and puffiness. It has become a favorite in my makeup bag.

I hope this post gives you a little insight about great products that are out there! You can get great quality without spending a fortune. Also, drugstores have sales every week and clearance sections for discontinuing colors/shades; so be on the look out for those.

February Birchbox!

21 Feb

I’m not sure about how many people are familiar with Birchbox, but it’s a company that basically send you 4-5 random makeup/hair/beauty samples once a month for $10. It’s a great way to try out new products without spending a fortune and sometimes they send you pretty decent size samples! I would definitely recommend it; I mean who wouldn’t love a little box full of presents every month?!

This is a picture of my birchbox from this month:

1. Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant: This is an exfoliating powder that you mix with water in order to make a paste. I actually used this a couple days ago and really enjoyed how fresh and smooth my skin felt. It was also a great size sample so I am pretty excited about that.

2. Eye Rock Designer Liner: These are stick on liquid liner strips. Clearly Halloween came early because that is the only time I could ever see myself wearing these.

3. Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint: First of all this is a tiny sample which I barely had enough to cover my entire face. Last month I received a lipgloss by this brand and I LOVED the quality and color of it so I was really excited to try this moisturizer out. I was really disappointed once I put it on because it was very shimmery and way too orange for my skin. It was so bad I washed it off immediately to save myself the embarrassment of going to class looking like an oompa loompa.

4. Juice Beauty Blemish Clearing Serum: Once again this was a very small sample. At first I thought this was an acne spot treatment but the directions said that it can be applied to the entire face. Coincidently, I had a pimple erupting like a bad volcano so I decided to give this a try and put it on before bed. I woke up in the morning and the pimple was significantly smaller and less red! wahoo! The formula is very sticky so I would only recommend putting this on specific acne spots.

5. Heart shaped nail file: Not shown in the picture because it’s already in my purse, but it’s a cute addition for February.

With all that being said, I was a little disappointed with this month’s box. None of the products really stood out to me and I don’t plan on purchasing any of them full-size. Womp womp.

What did you guys think of your February Birchbox? What samples did you love or hate? Let me know!
